About this work
This striking square canvas presents a nostalgic intersection of 1980s digital culture and contemporary artistic practice. Sinclair renders a meticulously detailed 3.5-inch floppy disk in oil paint, its surface bearing the iconic OutRun arcade game branding juxtaposed with "Big Oil" text. The work demonstrates exceptional technical skill, with the artist capturing the plastic sheen and magnetic disk's subtle texture through careful layering and precise brushwork. The composition centers the obsolete storage medium against a clean background, transforming this relic of early computing into a monument of material culture. The piece offers compelling commentary on technology's ephemeral nature while playfully acknowledging the irony of depicting digital media in the most traditional of materials. As a unique signed work with certificate of authenticity, it represents an important example of Sinclair's examination of media archaeology and industrial nostalgia. The substantial scale elevates the humble disk to heroic proportions, inviting collectors to reconsider overlooked technological artifacts through a contemporary lens. About Arlo Sinclair
Arlo Sinclair is a London based artist, born in South Africa, whose work centers on obsolete technology. As a child, his grandfather repaired a broken Commodore 64 for him, and that machine became his introduction to coding and games, eventually leading him to write his own software before he could afford to buy it.
Sinclair paints and sculpts outdated hardware, including floppy disks, game cartridges, controllers, and broken consoles, treating each object as a kind of cultural artifact. His work balances nostalgia with critique, using the visual language of early computing and gaming to comment on how quickly new technology becomes outdated, and on broader themes like data privacy, corporate collapse, and digital culture. Series such as Too Big to Fail reference the decline of once dominant companies, while other bodies of work use retro formats to satirize internet subcultures and conspiracy theories.
Every piece includes small, deliberate details and references meant to reward close looking, reflecting the amount of time Sinclair spends developing an idea before he begins painting. His background as a programmer shows through in the precision of his compositions, even as the subject matter stays playful and irreverent.
Sinclair's work has built a strong following among collectors, particularly within the tech industry, and his editions have sold out quickly since his earliest releases.
