About this work

Connor Gottfried has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary new media art, interrogating the cultural residue of early digital entertainment through technically rigorous, conceptually layered installations. His practice occupies a distinctive position at the intersection of sculpture, interactive media, and cultural archaeology, drawing critical attention for its refusal to treat video game aesthetics as mere nostalgia while simultaneously honoring their formative influence on millennial and Gen-Z visual consciousness. Turn/Tables (PaRappa's Delight) exemplifies Gottfried's ongoing investigation into the materiality of play and the physicality of supposedly immaterial experiences. The work encases functional gaming hardware—a Raspberry Pi running a PlayStation 1 emulator loaded with the 1996 rhythm game PaRappa the Rapper—within an industrial aluminum composite structure that recalls both minimalist sculpture and the utilitarian housings of arcade cabinets. The dual IPS screens create a spatial dialogue between gameplay and supplementary video content, while the 3D printed controller mount transforms the interactive element into a permanent sculptural gesture. Viewers are invited not simply to observe but to engage, collapsing the distance between art object and lived experience. The title references both the turntable mechanics central to PaRappa's hip-hop narrative and the conceptual turn Gottfried enacts by repositioning consumer technology as gallery-worthy artifact. This 2026 work represents a mature synthesis of concerns present throughout his practice: the preservation of ephemeral digital culture, the tension between interactivity and contemplation, and the elevation of play as a legitimate artistic medium.
