About this work

Connor Gottfried has emerged as one of the more compelling voices in contemporary new media art, distinguished by his refusal to treat technology as mere novelty. His practice interrogates the intersection of digital saturation and physical presence, creating objects that function simultaneously as sculpture, screen, and provocation. Gottfried's work has garnered increasing attention from collectors attuned to the evolving discourse around post-internet art and its material manifestations. Cartoon Acid exemplifies the artist's ongoing investigation into the aesthetics of overstimulation. The work encases a 19-inch IPS screen within aluminum composite panelling, secured by leather straps that evoke both industrial restraint and bodily containment. This tension between the clinical and the organic is central to Gottfried's visual language. The video component cycles through imagery that references the hypersaturated palette of animated entertainment, filtered through what the artist describes as a deliberately degraded digital consciousness. The result is an object that refuses easy categorization—neither purely sculptural nor simply a display device, it occupies an uncomfortable middle ground that mirrors contemporary experience of mediated reality. The leather strapping introduces an element of fetishistic restraint, suggesting that the screen itself requires binding, as though the content might otherwise escape its frame. At 32 by 23 by 7 inches, the work maintains a human scale that invites prolonged engagement while asserting its presence as a discrete object rather than an immersive environment. Gottfried's choice of materials demonstrates his characteristic precision in balancing industrial fabrication with handcrafted detail. About Connor Gottfried

Connor Gottfried is a Canadian artist, engineer, and musician based in Calgary. His interest in technology began at age five, when his father brought home an Apple II computer, sparking a lifelong fascination with computation and interactive systems that later became central to his art.

Gottfried builds large scale, playable sculptures and wall pieces from repurposed retro electronics, including Game Boys, Walkmans, cassette decks, and vintage game consoles. He combines acrylic, aluminum, and salvaged circuitry to transform outdated technology into interactive, often illuminated art objects, many of which retain their original playable function. His work explores themes of childhood, nostalgia, and obsolescence, treating old consoles and gadgets not as discarded relics but as objects capable of renewal.

His practice also incorporates an element of chance, using scraped paint, layered materials, and improvisation to let unplanned outcomes shape the final piece. Alongside his visual art, Gottfried has released numerous albums of experimental music and works as a technologist focused on education.

His work has been shown internationally, including at Guy Hepner in New York, StolenSpace in London, and galleries in Taiwan, with notable series including Lost Visions of the Future and Play.
