About this work

Connor Gottfried has emerged as a distinctive voice among artists interrogating the boundaries between digital experience and physical object. His practice centers on the materialization of virtual space, transforming the ephemeral nature of video game environments into tangible sculptural works that function as both art objects and interactive systems. Polygon represents a significant development in Gottfried's ongoing examination of gaming as cultural artifact. The work embeds a fully operational Nintendo 64 system within a sleek aluminum composite structure, running the original Super Mario 64—a title that fundamentally shaped three-dimensional game design upon its 1996 release. By preserving this software in a wall-mounted format complete with functional controller, Gottfried collapses the domestic ritual of gameplay into the contemplative space of the gallery. The piece operates simultaneously as sculpture, ready-made, and performance apparatus, inviting viewers to engage with or simply observe the perpetual possibility of play. The choice of Mario 64 is deliberate rather than nostalgic. Gottfried treats the game's polygonal landscapes as a specific moment in the history of simulated space—a primitive but revolutionary attempt to render navigable three-dimensional worlds. The work's title directly references this geometric foundation while suggesting the broader artistic lineage connecting Renaissance perspective to contemporary virtual environments. The industrial finish of the aluminum housing creates productive tension with the playful content it contains, positioning the work within conversations about technology, memory, and the institutionalization of interactive media.
