About this work
Connor Gottfried has emerged as one of the more compelling voices in contemporary new media art, distinguished by his rigorous interrogation of digital culture's psychological toll and the material contradictions inherent in our technological age. Working at the intersection of sculpture and screen-based media, Gottfried constructs objects that resist easy categorization, demanding physical presence while delivering content native to the endless scroll. *Haters* exemplifies the artist's mature practice, combining industrial materials with an embedded 19-inch IPS display to create a work that functions simultaneously as wall-mounted sculpture and perpetual video loop. The aluminum composite paneling and leather straps suggest both corporate signage and restraint—a deliberate tension that underscores the work's engagement with online hostility and the constrained conditions under which contemporary selfhood is performed. The sculptural housing transforms the screen from a window into an object, forcing viewers to confront the physicality of devices typically encountered as immaterial portals. Created in 2026, this work belongs to Gottfried's ongoing exploration of social media's affective economy, a thematic thread that has defined his output over the past several years. The dimensional depth of seven inches gives the piece substantial presence, while its modest footprint allows for integration into both domestic and institutional settings. Gottfried's works have found homes in significant private collections across North America and Europe, with collectors increasingly recognizing his position within the lineage of artists—from Nam June Paik to Cory Arcangel—who have made the screen itself a site of critical inquiry. About Connor Gottfried
Connor Gottfried is a Canadian artist, engineer, and musician based in Calgary. His interest in technology began at age five, when his father brought home an Apple II computer, sparking a lifelong fascination with computation and interactive systems that later became central to his art.
Gottfried builds large scale, playable sculptures and wall pieces from repurposed retro electronics, including Game Boys, Walkmans, cassette decks, and vintage game consoles. He combines acrylic, aluminum, and salvaged circuitry to transform outdated technology into interactive, often illuminated art objects, many of which retain their original playable function. His work explores themes of childhood, nostalgia, and obsolescence, treating old consoles and gadgets not as discarded relics but as objects capable of renewal.
His practice also incorporates an element of chance, using scraped paint, layered materials, and improvisation to let unplanned outcomes shape the final piece. Alongside his visual art, Gottfried has released numerous albums of experimental music and works as a technologist focused on education.
His work has been shown internationally, including at Guy Hepner in New York, StolenSpace in London, and galleries in Taiwan, with notable series including Lost Visions of the Future and Play.
