About this work

Connor Gottfried has established himself as a distinctive voice among emerging artists working at the intersection of digital nostalgia and contemporary sculpture. His practice interrogates the cultural residue of late-twentieth-century gaming systems, transforming obsolete technologies into meditative objects that challenge conventional boundaries between art, interactivity, and collective memory. *Pop-up* exemplifies Gottfried's ongoing investigation into the Nintendo 64 era as both aesthetic territory and emotional archive. The work embeds a fully functional gaming system within a sleek aluminum composite panel, presenting the 1997 title *Yoshi's Story* on an integrated IPS display. Visitors encounter not merely a representation of gaming culture but its living artifact—playable, tactile, and immediate. The inclusion of an original N64 controller, mounted on a custom 3D-printed bracket, extends an invitation to participate, collapsing the distance between viewer and artwork in ways that traditional media cannot achieve. What distinguishes this piece within Gottfried's output is its formal restraint. The industrial materiality of the aluminum panel contrasts sharply with the whimsical, saccharine world rendered on screen, generating a productive tension between hardware and software, container and contained. The work functions simultaneously as minimalist wall sculpture and portal to a specific moment in digital entertainment history, one now accessible only through emulation and preservation efforts like this. Gottfried's work speaks to a generation for whom these systems represent formative aesthetic experiences, while remaining conceptually rigorous enough to engage viewers without such biographical connections.
