About this work

This intimate portrait depicts the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche engaged in the unexpected act of applying nail polish. Mayoral renders the scene in acrylic on wood panel, creating a composition that balances historical gravitas with contemporary irreverence. The modest scale draws viewers into close contemplation, while the wood surface lends textural warmth to the philosopher's iconic features and concentrated expression. The artist's technique merges classical portraiture with a distinctly modern sensibility, finding humor and humanity in reimagining one of philosophy's most austere figures. Mayoral's work exemplifies a growing contemporary interest in subverting historical narratives through playful anachronism. By placing Nietzsche in this decidedly feminine act of self-care, the artist invites reflection on masculinity, vanity, and the unexpected vulnerabilities of great thinkers. The piece resonates with collectors drawn to figurative work that challenges conventions while maintaining technical excellence and visual accessibility. About Javier Mayoral

Javier Mayoral, known online as PulpBrother, was born in Spain, where he worked briefly for an advertising company before moving to the United States in his early thirties. He lived in New York, Phoenix, and San Francisco before eventually settling in Miami, where he now works full time as a painter.

Mayoral is entirely self-taught and worked as a chef for years while painting on the side, developing his style through small acrylic works on wood. His paintings are minimal and direct, typically pairing a single, easily recognizable figure with a witty or blunt handwritten caption, drawing on the visual language of advertising and illustration. His background in that industry shows through in the poster-like clarity of his compositions.

His work blends humor with pointed social and psychological commentary, taking cues from popular culture, Freudian ideas, and everyday absurdity, often delivered with a deadpan or irreverent tone. Mayoral built much of his early following directly through social media, where his fast, prolific output and consistent visual style resonated with a broad audience. He has since produced thousands of paintings and exhibited across the United States and in Spain, Austria, and France.
