About this work

Derek Macara's "Summer Clouds" presents a luminous study of the ever-shifting relationship between sky and sea that has become central to his practice. The canvas captures a moment of quiet atmospheric drama along the northeastern coastline, where billowing cumulus formations dominate the upper two-thirds of the composition, their voluminous forms rendered in gradations of warm white, pearl gray, and subtle touches of ochre where sunlight penetrates their edges. Below, the water mirrors this celestial activity, its surface alive with reflected light and the gentle movement characteristic of summer swells. Macara's handling of oil paint demonstrates his masterful understanding of how moisture and light interact in coastal environments. His brushwork shifts between precise definition in the cloud structures and looser, more gestural passages across the water's surface, creating a visual rhythm that guides the eye through the composition. The horizon line sits low, emphasizing the vastness of the sky and inviting contemplation of scale and atmosphere. The emotional register of "Summer Clouds" balances tranquility with a sense of anticipation—these are not static forms but dynamic presences suggesting the constant transformation inherent to coastal weather. This work exemplifies Macara's ongoing exploration of the American Northeast's distinctive maritime light, joining his broader body of work that celebrates the region's atmospheric conditions across seasons and times of day. The painting offers viewers both a specific moment and a universal meditation on the sublime qualities of the natural world. About Derek Macara

Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.

Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.

His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.

Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
