About this work

Derek Macara's "Clearing Fog" captures a liminal moment along the northeastern coastline, where dense marine atmosphere begins its slow retreat to reveal the quiet drama beneath. The composition unfolds across a generous horizontal format, emphasizing the expansive quality of sea and sky that defines this region's character. Soft gradations of silver, pewter, and muted blue dominate the palette, punctuated by subtle warmth where diffused light penetrates the thinning veil of mist. The horizon line sits low, granting the sky its proper authority over the scene while suggesting the vastness that draws viewers into contemplation. Macara builds his surfaces with deliberate restraint, layering oil pigment to achieve atmospheric depth without sacrificing the immediacy of observation. Shapes emerge and dissolve at the edges—perhaps distant landmasses, moored vessels, or simply the water itself catching uncertain light. This ambiguity feels intentional, inviting prolonged looking and personal interpretation. The emotional register strikes a balance between melancholy and hope, that particular feeling of anticipation when weather shifts and the world prepares to reveal itself anew. Within Macara's broader practice, "Clearing Fog" exemplifies his commitment to capturing transient conditions rather than static views. His work joins a lineage of American marine painting while speaking in a decidedly contemporary voice, stripped of nostalgic sentiment yet deeply respectful of tradition. The painting rewards patience, much like the coastal environments that inspire it, revealing subtleties that quickened glances would miss. About Derek Macara

Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.

Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.

His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.

Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
