About this work

Derek Macara's "Calm Before the Storm" captures a moment of suspended tension along the northeastern coastline, where sea and sky converge in a palette of muted grays, steely blues, and whispered whites. The composition draws the viewer into an expansive horizon line, where low-hanging clouds mass with quiet menace above waters that remain deceptively still. Macara's masterful handling of oil paint creates atmospheric depth through subtle gradations of tone, building layers that suggest moisture-laden air and the particular quality of light that precedes a weather shift. The surface texture alternates between smooth, almost glassy passages in the water and more gestural, impasto strokes in the cloud formations, lending the sky a sense of gathering energy. The emotional register of the work operates in that liminal space between tranquility and anticipation. There is beauty in this stillness, but it carries weight—the viewer senses what is coming even as they appreciate the present calm. This duality speaks to Macara's broader practice, which consistently explores the dramatic interplay between light, water, and weather along America's northeastern shores. His paintings honor a long tradition of maritime art while remaining firmly contemporary in their attention to mood over narrative detail. The square format of this canvas creates a balanced, meditative viewing experience, inviting prolonged contemplation of nature's quieter dramas. "Calm Before the Storm" exemplifies Macara's ability to transform familiar coastal atmospheres into deeply felt visual experiences. About Derek Macara

Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.

Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.

His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.

Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
