About this work

Derek Macara's "Dory in the Cove" presents a quintessential moment of stillness along the northeastern coastline, where a solitary wooden dory rests in the sheltered waters of a rocky inlet. The composition draws the eye toward the modest vessel, its weathered hull rendered in muted tones of faded red and natural wood grain, set against the cool grays and deep blues of the surrounding cove. Macara's characteristic atmospheric handling is evident in the soft diffusion of light that filters through an overcast sky, casting the entire scene in a luminous, silvery haze that speaks to the region's maritime climate. The artist employs a restrained palette dominated by slate blues, mossy greens, and the warm ochres of exposed granite, creating a harmonious interplay between the natural elements and the humble presence of human industry. His brushwork balances precision with gestural fluidity, allowing the texture of weathered rock and the gentle movement of shallow water to emerge organically from the paint surface. The cove itself functions as a natural frame, its encircling formations providing both compositional structure and a sense of refuge. Emotionally, the work evokes solitude without loneliness, suggesting instead a meditative quiet that rewards patient observation. This painting exemplifies Macara's ongoing exploration of the working waterfront's quieter corners, where vernacular vessels and timeworn landscapes speak to generations of coastal life. "Dory in the Cove" is available for acquisition through Guy Hepner in New York.

About Derek Macara

Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.

Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.

His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.

Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
