About this work
Derek Macara's "Long Point Storm" captures the raw, elemental power of a northeastern coastal tempest with striking immediacy. The 24 x 24 inch square canvas presents a dramatic seascape where churning waters meet a brooding, turbulent sky, the horizon line serving as a tenuous boundary between two realms of atmospheric chaos. Macara builds the composition through layers of oil paint, employing a restrained palette dominated by steely grays, deep blues, and flashes of white foam that punctuate the dark swells. The brushwork shifts between controlled passages and more gestural, expressive strokes that convey the wind-whipped energy of the scene. The square format creates a sense of containment that heightens the tension, as if the storm's fury is barely held within the frame's edges. Light breaks through the cloud cover in selective areas, illuminating patches of water with an almost silver luminosity that speaks to Macara's keen observation of how northeastern light behaves even in the most challenging conditions. There is both threat and beauty here—the emotional register balances awe with a certain melancholy, inviting contemplation of nature's indifference and grandeur. This work exemplifies Macara's ongoing exploration of the American Northeast's coastal atmospheres, demonstrating his ability to translate fleeting meteorological moments into enduring painted surfaces. His practice consistently returns to these liminal spaces where water, sky, and weather converge, and "Long Point Storm" stands as a powerful example of his commitment to this subject. About Derek Macara
Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.
Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.
His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.
Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
