About this work

Derek Macara's "Clouds over the Harbor" presents a quietly commanding view of the northeastern coastline, where sky and water engage in a subtle dialogue of light and atmosphere. The composition divides between an expansive cloudscape and the sheltered waters below, with the harbor serving as an anchor of human presence amid natural grandeur. Macara builds his clouds through layered applications of oil paint, achieving a luminosity that suggests moisture-laden air and the particular quality of coastal light that shifts between clarity and soft diffusion. The palette moves through a restrained range of slate grays, muted blues, and passages of warm ochre where sunlight breaks through the cloud cover. Below, the harbor waters carry reflections that Macara renders with confident, economical brushwork, allowing the paint itself to evoke the gentle movement of protected waters. Vessels and dock structures appear as essential forms rather than detailed portraits, their shapes grounding the scene in the working maritime tradition of the region. The emotional register here is one of contemplative stillness, the particular calm that settles over a harbor when weather gathers but has not yet arrived. Macara captures that suspended moment familiar to anyone who has watched clouds build over water, the atmosphere heavy with possibility. This work exemplifies his ongoing exploration of the American Northeast's coastal character, where atmosphere becomes subject and the boundary between sea and sky grows beautifully uncertain. "Clouds over the Harbor" is available for acquisition through Guy Hepner in New York.

About Derek Macara

Derek Macara is an American painter based in Truro, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. He was raised in Provincetown, a fishing town and art colony where several generations of his family worked as fishermen. As a child, he studied at the Hawthorne School of Art. He worked on fishing boats after high school before turning to painting full time.

Macara works primarily in oil, focusing on seascapes and coastal landscapes of the Outer Cape, including lighthouses, open water, and cloud formations built from his own reference photographs, which he merges and edits before painting. He shifted from acrylic to oil early in his career, favoring the slower drying time for blending.

His first exhibition, a set of flower and bee paintings shown at a local pizza shop in Provincetown, sold out. Since then, his work has been acquired by collectors, galleries, and museums internationally. He maintains an active online presence, sharing his painting process across social platforms and building a following around his working method.

Macara continues to live and paint in Truro, drawing his subject matter directly from the surrounding Outer Cape landscape.
