About this work

Taher Jaoui's painting practice is grounded in a commitment to exploring the threshold between the visible and the hidden — the idea that the surfaces of everyday experience conceal deeper layers of meaning, memory, and psychological truth that art's task is to access and illuminate. This conceptual preoccupation animates his large-scale canvases, in which oil and acrylic work together to construct images of layered complexity and emotional urgency. The Door Behind Reality (2026) is an oil and acrylic on canvas measuring 200 × 180 cm. The work's title establishes a metaphysical premise: that reality as perceived is itself a surface, behind which further dimensions of experience and understanding await. Jaoui's compositional approach enacts this premise visually — energetic brushstrokes and abstract forms converge to create a threshold sensation within the image, as if the viewer stands before a boundary that the paint both conceals and partially reveals. Bold gestural strokes and abstract forms conjure a conceptual threshold, inviting contemplation of hidden dimensions and unseen realities. The scale and ambition of The Door Behind Reality are characteristic of Jaoui's practice as a whole. The interplay of oil and acrylic across the canvas's surface creates shifting passages of opacity and transparency, thick impasto and translucent glaze — a material metaphor for the layers of concealment and revelation that the title invokes. This is a powerful work of painterly intelligence, combining formal ambition with philosophical depth that deepens on sustained engagement.

About Taher Jaoui

Taher Jaoui is a French artist of Tunisian origin, born in Tunis in 1978. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 2007 with a background in science and finance, and worked for a time as an actor before turning fully to painting in 2013, beginning with collage work using old photographs.

Jaoui's large scale abstract paintings draw on Abstract Expressionism, graffiti, African art, and the COBRA movement, combining oil, enamel, spray paint, and charcoal into densely layered surfaces. His compositions bring together vibrant color, gestural mark making, and recurring motifs, including circles, grids, and mathematical symbols, reflecting his earlier training in science and structured thinking even as the work itself remains intuitive and unplanned. His process is physical: he rotates the canvas continuously while painting, approaching it from every angle, treating the body as an active part of the composition rather than a separate tool. He has described this way of working as closer to dance than traditional painting, letting movement and instinct guide each layer.

Jaoui's work is held in private and public collections across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States, and he has exhibited widely, including in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Seoul. He is represented by galleries internationally, including Guy Hepner in New York.
