About this work

Taher Jaoui is an artist whose work occupies a compelling territory between figuration and abstraction, driven by an urgent engagement with the psychological and emotional dimensions of human experience. His large-scale canvases, worked in oil and acrylic, deploy vigorous gestural brushwork and an intensely saturated palette to construct images that feel simultaneously personal and universal in their emotional address. Love on the Edge (2026) is an oil and acrylic on canvas measuring 180 × 200 cm. Jaoui's signature gestural brushwork defines the surface: broad, confident marks build and dissolve form across the canvas, creating a dynamic compositional field in which semi-legible figures and abstract passages coexist in productive tension. The title announces the work's emotional preoccupation — the precarious beauty of love at its most intense, the vulnerability of connection forged at the boundary of the rational and the overwhelming — and the image gives these themes vivid, visceral form. Dynamic forms emerge from an abstract field of clashing and merging colour, evoking a raw sense of vulnerability and compelling tension. Jaoui's deployment of both oil and acrylic on a single canvas enables a range of surface qualities — from the luminous, translucent layers achievable in acrylic to the buttery, impasto richness of oil — that together create a pictorial surface of exceptional complexity. The large format amplifies the emotional intensity of the image, the scale ensuring that the viewer's encounter with the work is felt as much as seen. Love on the Edge is a work of considerable expressive ambition, demonstrating Jaoui's ability to locate the universal in the intimately personal.

About Taher Jaoui

Taher Jaoui is a French artist of Tunisian origin, born in Tunis in 1978. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 2007 with a background in science and finance, and worked for a time as an actor before turning fully to painting in 2013, beginning with collage work using old photographs.

Jaoui's large scale abstract paintings draw on Abstract Expressionism, graffiti, African art, and the COBRA movement, combining oil, enamel, spray paint, and charcoal into densely layered surfaces. His compositions bring together vibrant color, gestural mark making, and recurring motifs, including circles, grids, and mathematical symbols, reflecting his earlier training in science and structured thinking even as the work itself remains intuitive and unplanned. His process is physical: he rotates the canvas continuously while painting, approaching it from every angle, treating the body as an active part of the composition rather than a separate tool. He has described this way of working as closer to dance than traditional painting, letting movement and instinct guide each layer.

Jaoui's work is held in private and public collections across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States, and he has exhibited widely, including in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Seoul. He is represented by galleries internationally, including Guy Hepner in New York.
