About this work

Taher Jaoui's artistic practice draws on the language of gestural abstraction to investigate psychological states, existential conditions, and the complex dynamics of identity in the contemporary world. His paintings are simultaneously emotionally immediate and conceptually layered, offering the eye a richly worked surface while engaging the mind with titles that open onto wider philosophical territory. Ghost Protocol (2026) is an oil and acrylic on canvas measuring 80 × 100 cm — a more intimate scale than many of Jaoui's large-format works, but one that concentrates the work's energy rather than diminishing it. The title carries multiple resonances: a ghost is a presence that is also an absence, a trace of something that once was; protocol speaks to the structured, rule-governed behaviour of systems and networks. Together, Ghost Protocol suggests an investigation of invisibility within structure — the way individuals are processed, rendered spectral, or made legible through systems that may not see them fully. Jaoui's brushwork in this work — oil and acrylic applied with characteristic vigour and layering — creates a surface of atmospheric depth, passages of near-transparency and dense impasto producing a compositional field that is both materially rich and perceptually elusive. The work's relative intimacy of scale makes it a compelling choice for a domestic or smaller institutional context, its condensed energy not requiring the expansive architectural spaces demanded by Jaoui's largest canvases. Ghost Protocol is a work of precise emotional intelligence and considerable painterly accomplishment.

About Taher Jaoui

Taher Jaoui is a French artist of Tunisian origin, born in Tunis in 1978. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 2007 with a background in science and finance, and worked for a time as an actor before turning fully to painting in 2013, beginning with collage work using old photographs.

Jaoui's large scale abstract paintings draw on Abstract Expressionism, graffiti, African art, and the COBRA movement, combining oil, enamel, spray paint, and charcoal into densely layered surfaces. His compositions bring together vibrant color, gestural mark making, and recurring motifs, including circles, grids, and mathematical symbols, reflecting his earlier training in science and structured thinking even as the work itself remains intuitive and unplanned. His process is physical: he rotates the canvas continuously while painting, approaching it from every angle, treating the body as an active part of the composition rather than a separate tool. He has described this way of working as closer to dance than traditional painting, letting movement and instinct guide each layer.

Jaoui's work is held in private and public collections across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States, and he has exhibited widely, including in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Seoul. He is represented by galleries internationally, including Guy Hepner in New York.
