About this work
Taher Jaoui's paintings are consistently engaged with the psychological complexity of contemporary life — the decisions, tensions, and contradictions that define experience in a world of overwhelming optionality. His large-scale canvases render these abstract conditions in the visceral language of gestural paint, creating works that are both emotionally immediate and intellectually provocative. The Choice Paradox (2026) is an oil and acrylic on canvas measuring 180 × 200 cm. The title invokes the paradox well known to psychology and philosophy: that an abundance of options, rather than enabling freedom, can generate paralysis, regret, and a diminished sense of agency. Jaoui's painting gives this paradox vivid formal expression through a composition of energetic brushwork and layered textures that reveal fragmented forms and symbolic motifs emerging from an abstract field of clashing colours. The viewer's eye encounters no single clear resolution — the image multiplies its visual possibilities as it is explored, performing the condition the title describes. The canvas operates at a scale — 180 × 200 cm — that ensures the experience of viewing is physical as well as intellectual: the body is implicated in the confrontation with the image, unable to take in the whole at a glance and therefore subject to the same proliferation of partial perspectives that the paradox of choice engenders cognitively. This dynamic composition masterfully conveys the inherent tension and captivating complexity of human decision-making, affirming Jaoui's position as one of the most philosophically engaged painters working today.

About Taher Jaoui
Taher Jaoui is a French artist of Tunisian origin, born in Tunis in 1978. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, graduating in 2007 with a background in science and finance, and worked for a time as an actor before turning fully to painting in 2013, beginning with collage work using old photographs.
Jaoui's large scale abstract paintings draw on Abstract Expressionism, graffiti, African art, and the COBRA movement, combining oil, enamel, spray paint, and charcoal into densely layered surfaces. His compositions bring together vibrant color, gestural mark making, and recurring motifs, including circles, grids, and mathematical symbols, reflecting his earlier training in science and structured thinking even as the work itself remains intuitive and unplanned. His process is physical: he rotates the canvas continuously while painting, approaching it from every angle, treating the body as an active part of the composition rather than a separate tool. He has described this way of working as closer to dance than traditional painting, letting movement and instinct guide each layer.
Jaoui's work is held in private and public collections across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the United States, and he has exhibited widely, including in New York, Berlin, Hong Kong, Dubai, and Seoul. He is represented by galleries internationally, including Guy Hepner in New York.
