About this work

Roy Lichtenstein's La Sortie print from the Interiors series offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's unique interpretation of everyday scenes through the lens of pop art. Created in 1990, this print exemplifies Lichtenstein's signature style, characterized by bold lines, vibrant colors, and the appropriation of comic book imagery. At first glance, La Sortie appears to depict a mundane domestic interior: a woman stands in the doorway, framed by a colorful curtain, while a man sits at a table nearby. However, upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that Lichtenstein has transformed this seemingly ordinary scene into a visually dynamic composition that challenges traditional notions of representation. What sets La Sortie apart is Lichtenstein's use of bold graphic elements and exaggerated forms to create a sense of drama and tension within the image. The woman's angular pose and the dramatic contrast between light and shadow imbue the scene with a sense of theatricality, inviting viewers to speculate about the narrative unfolding before them. Moreover, La Sortie can be seen as a commentary on the pervasive influence of mass media and consumer culture on our understanding of domestic life. By appropriating imagery from popular sources and recontextualizing it within the realm of fine art, Lichtenstein challenges viewers to question the authenticity of their own experiences and perceptions. In addition to its conceptual depth, La Sortie is visually striking and aesthetically compelling. The vibrant colors, bold lines, and dynamic composition draw the viewer's eye across the image, while the subtle details and nuances invite closer inspection and contemplation.Overall, Roy Lichtenstein's La Sortie print from the Interiors series is a powerful example of his innovative approach to art-making and his ability to transform everyday subjects into iconic works of pop art. Through his bold visual style and his clever reinterpretation of domestic scenes, Lichtenstein invites viewers to reconsider their understanding of art, culture, and the world around them.

About the Interiors Series

Roy Lichtenstein Interiors Prints For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein Interiors prints for sale at Guy Hepner Gallery, New York. The Interiors series (1991–1992) is among the most conceptually sophisticated bodies of work in Lichtenstein's late print output — a suite of works drawn from the visual language of domestic furniture advertising and home decoration catalogues, applying his signature Pop graphic method to the imagery of American consumer aspiration.

The Concept

Where Lichtenstein's early Pop paintings drew their source material from comic books and mass-market advertising, the Interiors series turns to the interiors of American domestic life as depicted in furniture store catalogues, decorating magazines, and lifestyle advertising — the aspirational imagery of sofas, lampshades, side tables, and framed artworks arranged in ideal living rooms. By subjecting this source material to his standard graphic treatment — Ben-Day dots, flat colour fields, black outlines — he extends his long investigation of American consumer culture into its domestic interior.

The Interiors prints also contain a reflexive dimension. Several include representations of framed artworks hanging on the imaginary walls of the depicted rooms — a move that echoes the Reflections series and positions Lichtenstein's work within the economy of decorative display that he had been analysing since the early 1960s. Art as furniture, furniture as art: the Interiors series collapses that distinction with characteristic lightness.

The Interiors prints involve complex multi-layer screenprinting with fine dot patterning and extended flat colour areas. UV exposure causes colour drift in these large-format works; UV-protective glazing and archival storage are essential.

Hand-signed examples from documented editions carry premiums over unsigned impressions.

The Interiors series has attracted increased critical and institutional attention over the past decade as the full scope of Lichtenstein's late-career practice has been reassessed. Works from this series appear with growing frequency at major auction houses and in significant private collections.

Corlett catalogue raisonné reference and publisher's documentation are essential. Verify edition numbers against published parameters.

Authentication

Interiors prints are authenticated via the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation catalogue raisonné (Corlett). Guy Hepner provides full provenance documentation for all works.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) is the defining figure of American Pop Art and one of the most actively traded artists on the post-war and contemporary market. His bold graphic language — Ben-Day dots, black outlines, primary palettes drawn from comic books and advertising — is among the most instantly recognisable in twentieth-century art. Born in New York City, he was exhibited by Leo Castelli Gallery from 1962 and worked until his death in September 1997, producing one of the most extensively documented print catalogues of any artist of his generation.

Roy Lichtenstein Art For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein art for sale spans signed prints, paintings, and unique works across his full catalogue. His most collected categories: signed and numbered screenprints and lithographs from the major series, unique works on paper, and large-format canvas paintings. The auction benchmark was set when Masterpiece (1962) sold for $165 million in a private transaction in 2017, and Nurse (1964) achieved $95.4 million at Christie's New York in 2015. Major print series regularly achieve $100,000–$2 million at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips.

  • Haystacks (1969) — Monet homage in Ben-Day dots and primary colour; his most decorative print subject
  • Cathedral — Rouen Cathedral reworked through his commercial-art graphic vocabulary
  • American Indian Theme (1980) — a major suite exploring Indigenous American motifs
