White Shirts is among Katz's most formally rigorous series — an extended meditation on the dressed figure that uses the simple white dress shirt as a vehicle for exploring light, fabric, and the relationship between figure and ground.
Worn by a variety of sitters, the shirt becomes in Katz's hands a near-abstract element: a field of off-white, cream, and grey tones, modulated by light and the cut of the fabric, against which the face and hands emerge as the focus of the composition. The series demonstrates his mastery of tonal restraint — the ability to sustain pictorial tension within a very limited palette. These are works about looking: about what happens when you remove everything except the essential relationship between a person and a piece of clothing.
The White Shirts works also speak to Katz's relationship with American commercial aesthetics — the dress shirt as a cultural object, an index of social aspiration and understated elegance — filtered through his singular formal intelligence.
This series offers a distinctive entry point into Katz's figure painting, with works accessible at a range of price points. Guy Hepner maintains inventory across this series and can advise on current market values.

Five Facts About Alex Katz White Shirts
White Shirt (2021) is a portfolio of six archival pigment prints, the first time Katz published a print series built entirely around the recurring motif of a young man in a plain white shirt.
The six prints are each titled after their sitter, including White Shirt (Eric), White Shirt (Rob), White Shirt (Perry), White Shirt (William), and two prints of Katz's son, poet Vincent Katz — White Shirt (Vincent 1) and White Shirt (Vincent 2).
Each print measures 26 x 15 inches and was published in an edition of 50 on Innova Etching Cotton Rag paper.
The white-shirted young man had already appeared as a recurring motif in Katz's paintings before the 2021 portfolio brought the subject together as a dedicated set of prints.
