Alex Katz's longstanding collaboration with choreographer Paul Taylor is one of the most productive artist-choreographer relationships in American cultural history, and the Dancers series is its most direct visual expression. Since the 1960s, Katz has designed sets and costumes for Taylor's company while simultaneously producing paintings and prints that capture the dancer's body as a formal and expressive subject.

About the Series

The Dancers works capture the human body in motion — but motion arrested, fixed at a moment of extension, balance, or transition that reveals the body's graphic potential. Katz's flat planes of colour and precise outlines are especially effective with the dancer's form, where the body itself becomes a line drawing executed in flesh and fabric. The works are neither documentary nor celebratory in any conventional sense: they are formal investigations of the body as image.
