Landscape, Reduced to Essentials

Katz approaches nature the way he approaches a face: he strips away incident until only the defining gesture remains. A stand of trees becomes a rhythm of dark verticals; a sunset becomes a few clean planes of graded colour. This reductive clarity, developed over decades in Maine and New York, gives his landscapes their distinctive charge — they read as both immediate observation and considered design, representational yet almost abstract in their flatness and scale.

The results feel effortless but depend on exacting craft, and Katz has pursued that precision across an unusually wide range of print media.

The Works

The nature works gathered here span a range of techniques that show Katz's command of the print medium. Harbour (2008) is a linoleum cut on Arches paper; Reflection (2010) a seven-colour screenprint; Three Trees (2018) a twenty-colour silkscreen of remarkable complexity. Alongside these sit Maine Woods 3 (2016), a single-colour woodblock, and a luminous group of archival pigment works from 2020 — Sunrise, Sunset, Sunset 2, Sunset 3 and Twilight — in which Katz captures the shifting light of a single landscape across the day. Together they read as a sustained meditation on colour, time and place.
