About the Series

Flags, with their bold geometries and primary colours, create a formal counterpoint to the organic complexity of flowers: the regularity of the grid against the asymmetry of the petal, the political against the natural, the designed against the found. Katz exploits these contrasts with characteristic lightness — the works carry no political weight, only the pleasure of formal invention.

The floral works within this series — irises, tulips, peonies, freesias — continue his long engagement with botanical subject matter, which he approaches with the same economy of means he brings to the human face: the flower reduced to its essential graphic event, set against a field of colour that emphasises rather than describes.
