Green Eyes, 2002
Yoshitomo Nara's *Green Eyes* (2002) exemplifies the Japanese artist's singular ability to distill complex emotional states into deceptively simple imagery. Created during a particularly prolific period following his return to Japan from over a decade in Germany, this work showcases the piercing gaze and ambiguous expression that have become synonymous with Nara's practice. The titular green eyes anchor the composition, drawing viewers into an intimate confrontation with a figure that embodies both innocence and quiet rebellion. Nara's children, rendered with cartoon-like economy yet profound psychological depth, occupy a liminal space between sweetness and subversion—a duality rooted in the artist's deep engagement with punk rock and underground music culture. These influences manifest not through overt aggression but through an unmistakable attitude of self-possession and resistance. Works from this early 2000s period hold particular significance within Nara's oeuvre, representing the artist at the height of his creative evolution before his practice shifted toward softer, more contemplative imagery in subsequent years. Collectors and institutions worldwide continue to seek pieces from this era, recognizing their art historical importance within the broader Neo-Pop and Superflat movements. *Green Eyes* demonstrates why Nara remains one of the most sought-after contemporary artists working today, commanding exceptional results at auction and in private sales alike. Yoshitomo Nara
Y.N. Self Portrait
2002
Lithography is where Yoshitomo Nara's drawing comes alive as a multiple. His lithographs preserve the immediacy of the artist's hand — the searching line, the smudge and erasure, the deceptively simple contour of a face — in editions that made his imagery accessible to a wider audience without diluting its charge. Ranging across two decades, they form one of the richest seams of Nara's printed work. Guy Hepner presents Yoshitomo Nara lithographs at our New York gallery.
Lithography is a planographic process built on the mutual resistance of grease and water: the artist draws directly onto a stone or plate with a greasy medium, the surface is chemically treated, and ink adheres only to the drawn marks. Because the artist essentially draws the image, lithography suits Nara perfectly — it carries the nuance of his line more faithfully than almost any other print medium, retaining the softness and hesitation that give his figures their emotional weight.
N. Self Portrait (all 2002). Titles like Straight Jacket and Time Goes On* signal the emotional register — humour and unease held in the same frame.
Across the lithographs the familiar cast returns: the solitary child, the animal companion, the guitar and the flame, rendered in Nara's economical line and muted, chalky colour. Each figure meets the viewer head-on, occupying an empty field that turns the sheet itself into a kind of stage. What looks childlike on the surface carries the more adult undertow — loneliness, resistance, tenderness — that has made Nara one of the most quietly powerful figurative artists of his generation.
Nara's lithographs are a natural starting point for collectors and a rewarding area for those building depth, complementing his woodblock prints, early works and editions. Guy Hepner Gallery offers authenticated Nara lithographs with full provenance documentation. Contact our New York team to discuss current availability and acquisition.

Yoshitomo Nara
Yoshitomo Nara (b. 1959, Hirosaki, Japan) stands as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Japanese art, whose deceptively simple portraits of wide-eyed children—at once innocent and subversively defiant—have become icons of the Neo-Pop movement. Trained in Düsseldorf and deeply influenced by punk rock and anime culture, Nara creates works that resonate across cultural boundaries, commanding an international collector base and record-breaking auction results. His paintings, drawings, and sculptures are held in major museum collections worldwide, cementing his position as a defining voice in 21st-century art.
