About this work
Jesse Morsberger has established himself as a distinctive voice in contemporary figurative painting, earning recognition for his psychologically charged portraits that merge classical technique with an unsettling contemporary sensibility. His work has garnered significant attention from collectors seeking artists who bridge traditional oil painting methods with a modern emotional vocabulary, positioning him as a notable figure within the current resurgence of representational art. In Dante, Morsberger presents a commanding portrait rendered with his characteristic technical precision and atmospheric depth. The composition centers on a solitary figure whose presence dominates the forty-by-thirty-four-inch canvas, drawing the viewer into an intimate yet ambiguous encounter. Morsberger's handling of oil paint demonstrates his facility with the medium, building layers that create luminous skin tones set against muted, deliberately restrained backgrounds. The titular reference to the medieval poet suggests themes of journey, introspection, and perhaps purgatorial states of being, inviting interpretation while resisting easy narrative resolution. Light falls across the subject with careful intentionality, sculpting form while simultaneously obscuring, a tension that defines much of the artist's output. The scale of the work commands physical presence in any collection, asserting itself as a significant statement piece rather than a quiet accent. This 2025 painting represents the continued evolution of an artist whose market presence continues to strengthen as institutional and private collectors increasingly recognize the enduring value of skilled figurative work in an art world often dominated by conceptual practices. About Jesse Morsberger
Jesse Morsberger was born in Brooklyn in 1994 and currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He received his BFA in Drawing and Painting from SUNY Purchase College in 2016. He was a fellow/resident at the Vermont Studio Center in 2020, and has exhibited with institutions and galleries including Nicodim Gallery, Kravets Wehby Gallery, Milk Gallery, Taymour Grahne Projects, Andrea Festa Fine Art, and COVA Art Gallery.
His practice is heavily influenced by video games and the visual language of digital worlds. Growing up, gaming was a significant part of his life, providing an alternate space for fantasy and escape. His paintings translate the 16-bit aesthetics of games into traditional oil painting, creating a deliberate tension between the pixelated, digital image and the physicality of paint.
