H18-1 Harlequin is a diasec-mounted giclée on aluminium created by Damien Hirst in 2024, the first work in his H18 Kaleidoscopes series. Available in an edition of 180 plus 20 Artist's Proofs and measuring 33½ by 55⅛ inches, the work continues Hirst's decades-long exploration of butterfly wing compositions arranged in geometric patterns. The diasec mounting process — in which the print is face-mounted directly to acrylic and backed onto aluminium — produces a surface of exceptional depth and luminosity, with colors that appear almost to emanate from within. The title Harlequin references the diamond-patterned costume of the commedia dell'arte character — a figure of wit, disguise, and dexterous movement — whose variegated colors find a direct echo in the kaleidoscopic butterfly wing compositions that define this series. Hirst's butterfly works arrange wings in meticulously structured, symmetrical patterns against vivid grounds, creating compositions that are simultaneously natural and entirely constructed.
