About this work

Sage Barnes has emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary art, garnering attention for work that bridges street art sensibilities with fine art execution. Operating at the intersection of urban culture and traditional painting, Barnes has cultivated a following among collectors drawn to artists who challenge conventional boundaries between high and low art forms. Las Flores exemplifies Barnes's innovative approach to mixed media, combining acrylic and spray paint with an integrated neon lightbulb element that transforms the canvas into an illuminated object. The work demonstrates the artist's facility with contrasting materials and techniques, merging the gestural spontaneity of spray paint with the deliberate application of acrylic. The inclusion of functional neon elevates the piece beyond traditional painting, creating an immersive visual experience that shifts depending on ambient lighting conditions. The floral subject matter, suggested by the title, takes on new dimension through this interplay of painted surface and electric light, inviting extended contemplation of the relationship between natural forms and artificial illumination. At forty by thirty inches, the work commands presence while remaining suited to both residential and corporate collections. Barnes's decision to incorporate industrial lighting elements speaks to a broader conversation within contemporary practice about the expanding definition of painting and the dissolution of medium-specific categories. This original work represents an opportunity to acquire a significant example from an artist whose trajectory continues to build momentum in the primary market. Guy Hepner is pleased to offer Las Flores to discerning collectors seeking work that embodies the innovative spirit of emerging contemporary practice. About the Las Flores Series

Bloom Paintings | Sage Barnes | Guy Hepner, New York

About the Series

The Bloom Paintings are Sage Barnes's signature works and the body of practice that has attracted the most serious collector attention. These large-scale figurative paintings place female figures within dense, richly developed botanical environments — flowers, leaves, and organic forms that grow around, through, and with the figure, creating compositions of extraordinary visual complexity that reward sustained attention.

Barnes works in oil on canvas, building surfaces through multiple layers of paint that create depth without losing the freshness of the mark. His figures are rendered with a technical precision unusual for an artist of his generation — the faces, hands, and forms observed with patience and care — while the surrounding botanical elements are handled with a more painterly freedom that creates productive tension within each composition.

The Bloom Paintings sit within a long tradition of figure-and-nature painting while feeling entirely contemporary in their visual language. Barnes draws on fashion photography, illustration, and graphic design as freely as he draws on the history of painting — the result is work that is formally serious without being academic, accessible without being decorative.

About Sage Barnes

Sage Barnes is a self-taught American artist working from his studio, known as "the lab," in Kansas. He studied for a time at FIDM in Los Angeles before leaving to pursue art full time, first gaining recognition in 2016 for a series of urban style paintings featuring suited male figures.

Barnes combines abstract, realistic, and street art techniques, often within the same piece, using acrylic and spray paint alongside non-traditional materials such as neon, stucco, and concrete. His figurative portraits are especially distinctive, frequently obscuring the head with bursts of color, smiley faces, floral arrangements, or splattered paint, shifting attention away from identity and toward gesture and emotion. His process is physical and often destructive by design, incorporating action painting and, at times, breaking into finished surfaces with tools to reveal new forms underneath.

His work explores universal experiences of identity, introspection, and everyday behavior, often approached with a dry, tongue in cheek sense of humor beneath the visual intensity. Barnes continues to push the material boundaries of painting, treating each new body of work as an opportunity to expand his technique.

His work is held in private collections throughout North America and internationally, and he has held multiple solo exhibitions, including several with Guy Hepner in New York.
