About this work

Sage Barnes has emerged as one of the most compelling voices in contemporary mixed media practice, earning recognition for works that interrogate the boundaries between organic form and constructed surface. Operating at the intersection of painting, collage, and sculptural intervention, Barnes has developed a visual language that speaks to themes of growth, decay, and renewal with remarkable formal precision. The artist's work has garnered institutional attention and a growing collector base, positioning Barnes as a significant figure among a generation of artists reshaping contemporary approaches to materiality. Bloom #8 represents a pivotal entry in the artist's ongoing Bloom series, a body of work that explores botanical imagery through layered accumulation and deliberate erasure. In this unique canvas, Barnes employs a dense orchestration of pigment, found materials, and gestural mark-making to evoke the simultaneity of flourishing and dissolution inherent in natural cycles. The monumental scale of the work—48 by 72 inches—allows the viewer to experience the piece as an immersive environment rather than a mere object of contemplation. The composition demonstrates Barnes's characteristic tension between control and spontaneity, with passages of meticulous detail giving way to raw, unresolved passages that activate the surface with palpable energy. As a unique work signed by the artist, Bloom #8 carries particular significance for collectors seeking a defining example from this celebrated series. The piece arrives directly through primary market channels with clear provenance documentation. For acquisition inquiries regarding this work by Sage Barnes, please contact Guy Hepner.

About Sage Barnes

Sage Barnes is a self-taught American artist working from his studio, known as "the lab," in Kansas. He studied for a time at FIDM in Los Angeles before leaving to pursue art full time, first gaining recognition in 2016 for a series of urban style paintings featuring suited male figures.

Barnes combines abstract, realistic, and street art techniques, often within the same piece, using acrylic and spray paint alongside non-traditional materials such as neon, stucco, and concrete. His figurative portraits are especially distinctive, frequently obscuring the head with bursts of color, smiley faces, floral arrangements, or splattered paint, shifting attention away from identity and toward gesture and emotion. His process is physical and often destructive by design, incorporating action painting and, at times, breaking into finished surfaces with tools to reveal new forms underneath.

His work explores universal experiences of identity, introspection, and everyday behavior, often approached with a dry, tongue in cheek sense of humor beneath the visual intensity. Barnes continues to push the material boundaries of painting, treating each new body of work as an opportunity to expand his technique.

His work is held in private collections throughout North America and internationally, and he has held multiple solo exhibitions, including several with Guy Hepner in New York.
