About this work

Bloom #6, by Sage Barnes, is a large-scale mixed media work on canvas measuring 48 by 72 inches, belonging to the artist's Bloom Paintings series. Working in mixed media — an approach that enables the layering of diverse materials, textures, and processes on a single surface — Barnes brings to this substantial canvas the full expressive range of her practice, exploring the bloom as a subject that is simultaneously botanical, emotional, and abstractly formal. The generous dimensions of the work give full scope to the series' signature gesture of unfurling, expanding form. The "bloom" as a concept carries rich associations: the opening of a flower, the flush of color in a face, the appearance of something new and vital. In Barnes's Bloom Paintings series, this multiplicity of meaning is channeled through a practice that combines painterly gesture with the material density that mixed media enables. Layers of paint, texture, and mark-building accumulate on the canvas surface to create images of considerable visual complexity and emotional directness, the bloom's associations of growth, abundance, and transience rendered through materials that are themselves layered, developed, and transformed over time. Sage Barnes's Bloom Paintings series represents a committed and sustained exploration of a single, richly productive motif — an approach to serial work that invites comparison with the great serial traditions of art history. Bloom #6, as a major canvas within this series, demonstrates the artist's growing confidence and authority in handling both the scale and the conceptual demands of her chosen subject. It is a work of visual abundance and painterly ambition that rewards prolonged engagement.

About Sage Barnes

Sage Barnes is a self-taught American artist working from his studio, known as "the lab," in Kansas. He studied for a time at FIDM in Los Angeles before leaving to pursue art full time, first gaining recognition in 2016 for a series of urban style paintings featuring suited male figures.

Barnes combines abstract, realistic, and street art techniques, often within the same piece, using acrylic and spray paint alongside non-traditional materials such as neon, stucco, and concrete. His figurative portraits are especially distinctive, frequently obscuring the head with bursts of color, smiley faces, floral arrangements, or splattered paint, shifting attention away from identity and toward gesture and emotion. His process is physical and often destructive by design, incorporating action painting and, at times, breaking into finished surfaces with tools to reveal new forms underneath.

His work explores universal experiences of identity, introspection, and everyday behavior, often approached with a dry, tongue in cheek sense of humor beneath the visual intensity. Barnes continues to push the material boundaries of painting, treating each new body of work as an opportunity to expand his technique.

His work is held in private collections throughout North America and internationally, and he has held multiple solo exhibitions, including several with Guy Hepner in New York.
