The Series

The Painting Series belongs to a cluster of late-career works in which Lichtenstein turned his graphic system inward, using it to examine art itself — how paintings are displayed (Reflections), how paintings are made (Painting Series), and what domestic life looks like when organised around paintings (Interiors). Where the Reflections series depicts finished canvases hanging on gallery walls, the Painting Series depicts paintings as objects: the stretched canvas, the gold frame, the abstract painted surface behind which the painted image appears to recede.

Several works in the series depict canvases within canvases — paintings of paintings, in which an abstract expressionist-style gestural canvas is shown as the subject of a work in Lichtenstein's flat Pop vocabulary. Two Paintings works (Dagwood, Green Lamp, Sleeping Muse) present paired canvases, each depicting a flat rendering of what appears to be a 1960s Pop or Minimalist canvas. The meta-commentary is precise: Lichtenstein is painting paintings of paintings in a style that comments on painting.

The works were published in 1984, three years before his death, and represent a mature summation of his engagement with the question of representation and reproduction that had animated his practice since the early 1960s.
