The Series

The works depict rural and semi-rural subjects — road before the forest, river, seascape, moonscape, the sower, sunshine through clouds, view from a window — subjects that carry clear resonances with the French landscape tradition (particularly Monet and the Barbizon School) while being rendered in the language of American commercial illustration.

The series is closely related to his Haystack and Cathedral portfolios in its serial approach to a single subject type, but where those series maintained consistent scale and viewpoint, the Landscapes embrace a wider range of compositional strategies. The seascape compositions within the Landscapes series anticipate the standalone Seascapes portfolio, while the moonscape prefigures his Moonscape (1965) single-print subjects.

The portfolio was published with Gemini G.E.L., Lichtenstein's primary print publisher from the 1960s through the 1990s, and represents a significant body of work within the broader arc of his printmaking career.

Collecting Landscapes Prints

Subject variety. The Landscapes series offers a wider range of subjects than any of his other serial portfolios. Individual prints appeal to different collector and interior design sensibilities, from the bold graphic seascape to the more intimate road-before-forest composition.
