About this work

This work by Roy Lichtenstein exemplifies his mastery of the formal language he developed in the early 1960s — the Ben-Day dot technique borrowed from commercial printing, the bold black outlines, the primary and secondary colour palette, the appropriation of mass-cultural imagery elevated into fine art. Lichtenstein's practice is both formally rigorous and culturally acute, each work a precisely calibrated engagement with the imagery and assumptions of its source material. Lichtenstein is one of the canonical figures of American Pop Art, and his market reflects both his historical importance and the genuine formal pleasure his works afford. Prints, works on paper, and paintings are all actively traded, with strong results across all categories at major international auction houses.
