Harland MillerWorks on Paper For Sale

Overview

Harland Miller's works on paper distil the wit, melancholy and painterly richness of his larger canvases into a more intimate format. A British artist and acclaimed novelist, Miller is best known for his reimagined vintage Penguin book covers — large-scale paintings that marry image and text in a tradition of word-based art comparable in ambition to Ed Ruscha. On paper, that fusion of language and gesture takes on a direct, hand-worked quality. Guy Hepner presents Harland Miller works on paper at our New York gallery.

Word and Image

Born in Yorkshire and trained at Chelsea College of Art, Miller built his reputation on the collision of literature and painting. His signature works adopt the format of the well-thumbed Penguin paperback — the horizontal bands, the aged spine, the authoritative typography — but replace the title with lines of his own: mordant, funny, often quietly devastating. Phrases such as If The Phone Don't Ring, It's Me and Death, What's In It For Me? read like one-liners that keep opening onto something sadder and more human the longer you look.

The Works

The works on paper gathered here show Miller working across acrylic, silkscreen and hand-finishing. Pieces such as Love, A Decisive Blow If Against (2013) combine acrylic, pencil and silkscreen on paper, while later works including I Am The One I've Been Waiting For and If The Phone Don't Ring, It's Me (both 2019) layer oil over silkscreen. Several are unique hand-finished works — among them Death What's In It For Me? and the yellow variant of I Am The One I've Been Waiting For — where the artist reworks a printed base by hand, so that no two impressions are quite alike.

That hand-finishing is central to their appeal: the texture, the drips and the painterly incident sit in tension with the crisp typography, keeping the works firmly in the realm of painting rather than pure print.
