Oil on linen

In this luminous oil painting, Thielker captures the ephemeral experience of driving through rainfall, depicting a wet highway stretching toward the horizon. Rain-streaked windshield glass creates a distorted, dreamlike view of the road ahead, where water droplets catch and refract light in delicate patterns. The artist's meticulous technique renders each droplet with extraordinary precision, while blurred landscape elements beyond suggest movement and speed. Rich blues and grays dominate the composition, punctuated by the warm glow of distant brake lights and streetlamps that shimmer through the precipitation. Thielker has become renowned for his virtuosic paintings that transform ordinary moments of transit into meditative studies of perception and memory. This substantial canvas exemplifies his masterful ability to balance photorealistic detail with painterly abstraction, creating work that resonates with viewers through its universal subject matter while demonstrating exceptional technical skill. The painting invites contemplation on themes of journey, solitude, and the beauty found in transient atmospheric conditions. Available for purchase — enquire for price and availability.

Gregory Thielker is an American artist currently based in Geneva, Switzerland, known for hyperrealistic oil paintings that capture the experience of perception itself. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art and Design and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.
Thielker's paintings are meticulously rendered, often taking weeks or months to complete, and focus on scenes viewed through obscured or shifting perspectives, most notably roads and landscapes seen through rain-streaked car windows. His series Under the Unminding Sky captures these blurred, in-between moments, using precision technique to convey something closer to memory or mood than a straightforward record of place. Working from personal photographs and direct observation, he is drawn to how the road frames and limits the way landscape is experienced.
His work has taken him around the world, including extended projects in India, Afghanistan, El Salvador, and along the entire length of the US Mexico border. He is a Fulbright Fellow and has completed residencies in Norway, Argentina, and India, among others.
Thielker has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, with venues including Guy Hepner in New York, Galerie Le Feuvre & Roze in Paris, and Castor Gallery in New York. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, The Guardian, and La Repubblica.
