About this work

# Ballad This intimate oil painting captures the ephemeral beauty of a rain-streaked windshield, transforming an everyday moment into a meditation on perception and memory. Thielker masterfully renders droplets and rivulets of water cascading across glass, creating a luminous veil that partially obscures the landscape beyond. His meticulous technique brings extraordinary depth to the distorted view, where blurred forms and refracted light evoke the dreamlike quality of travel and transition. The square format creates a contemplative frame for this fragmented vision of the world outside. Thielker has established himself as a virtuoso of windshield paintings, elevating automotive perspectives into poetic contemporary landscapes. His works resonate with collectors who appreciate technical mastery paired with emotional resonance, capturing the solitary experience of driving while transforming it into something universally human. This piece exemplifies his ability to find profound beauty in transient moments, making it a compelling addition to collections focused on contemporary realism and perceptual exploration. About Gregory Thielker

Gregory Thielker is an American artist currently based in Geneva, Switzerland, known for hyperrealistic oil paintings that capture the experience of perception itself. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art and Design and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

Thielker's paintings are meticulously rendered, often taking weeks or months to complete, and focus on scenes viewed through obscured or shifting perspectives, most notably roads and landscapes seen through rain-streaked car windows. His series Under the Unminding Sky captures these blurred, in-between moments, using precision technique to convey something closer to memory or mood than a straightforward record of place. Working from personal photographs and direct observation, he is drawn to how the road frames and limits the way landscape is experienced.

His work has taken him around the world, including extended projects in India, Afghanistan, El Salvador, and along the entire length of the US Mexico border. He is a Fulbright Fellow and has completed residencies in Norway, Argentina, and India, among others.

Thielker has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, with venues including Guy Hepner in New York, Galerie Le Feuvre & Roze in Paris, and Castor Gallery in New York. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, The Guardian, and La Repubblica.
