About this work

Solar is a unique sculptural work created by Dan Lam in 2023, part of her Color Sculptures series, rendered in foam, acrylic, polymer, and resin. At just 5½ by 6 by 5½ inches, Solar is among the most intimate works in Lam's oeuvre — a compact form that concentrates the energy of her material language into a dense, jewel-like object. The title situates the work within a celestial frame of reference: solar suggests the sun, radiant energy, the sustaining source of warmth and light. Within this diminutive scale, Lam achieves remarkable chromatic intensity. The layered acrylics of the Color Sculptures series build toward a warmth that, in a piece titled Solar, reads as almost incandescent — a small body radiating outward, its surface alive with polymer growths and resinous drips that are hallmarks of her practice. The intimate dimensions invite a closer, more attentive engagement than her larger works, placing the viewer in a relationship of careful observation — studying the surface topography, tracking the paths of individual drips, reading the work's tactile complexity at close range. This proximity is part of Solar's particular and considered appeal. Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry based in Dallas, Texas, whose practice has garnered significant international recognition. Known for her distinctive drippy sculptures that deploy polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin, she has developed a visual language that is immediately recognizable and broadly celebrated. Her works navigate the space between desire and unease, between the confectionery and the biological, with consummate formal intelligence. As a unique work, Solar is an unrepeatable object — a singular expression of Lam's ongoing investigation into color, material, and tactile presence.

About Dan Lam

Dan Lam earned a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2010, followed by an MFA from Arizona State University in 2014, where she began developing the sculptural techniques that would come to define her practice.

Lam creates drippy, blob like sculptures using polyurethane foam, resin, and acrylic, often finished with auto body paint that shifts color as viewers move around the piece. Her work sits at the border of attraction and repulsion, taking cues from natural forms found in the body and the ocean while pushing them into something stranger and more excessive. Materials play a defining role in her process, and she often allows their behavior to guide the final shape of a piece rather than working from a fixed plan.

Lam's sculptures have been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, along with shows in Paris and Munich. Her work has also reached a wide audience through social media, where her process videos and finished pieces have drawn broad public attention beyond the traditional gallery world.
