About this work

Sit With It is a unique sculptural work created by Dan Lam in 2023, rendered in polymer, foam, and acrylic. At 19.5 by 10.5 by 9 inches, the sculpture occupies a vertical, upright register that gives it an almost totemic presence. The title carries a quiet philosophical weight — an invitation to remain, to dwell, to resist the impulse to resolve or categorize what one is experiencing. It is a fitting directive for an artwork that refuses easy classification. Lam's forms characteristically resist the tidy boundaries of art historical genre, blending elements of the biomorphic, the geological, and the confectionery into something altogether new. Sit With It exemplifies this sensibility: its surface accretions of polymer and foam read as simultaneously geological and biological, suggesting coral formations, fungal growth, or some slow-moving lava flow. The work belongs to the Color Sculptures series, in which Lam deploys her most expansive chromatic range, applying vibrant, saturated acrylic hues directly into the material so that color becomes structural rather than merely decorative. Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry who has become one of the most recognized figures in contemporary tactile sculpture. Her work, built from polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin, engages a broad audience by activating a dual and contradictory response — the desire to touch alongside a subtle unease at what that touching might feel like. Lam has exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, and her practice continues to evolve in scale, material, and conceptual reach. As a unique work, Sit With It represents an unrepeatable encounter with the artist's process.

About Dan Lam

Dan Lam earned a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2010, followed by an MFA from Arizona State University in 2014, where she began developing the sculptural techniques that would come to define her practice.

Lam creates drippy, blob like sculptures using polyurethane foam, resin, and acrylic, often finished with auto body paint that shifts color as viewers move around the piece. Her work sits at the border of attraction and repulsion, taking cues from natural forms found in the body and the ocean while pushing them into something stranger and more excessive. Materials play a defining role in her process, and she often allows their behavior to guide the final shape of a piece rather than working from a fixed plan.

Lam's sculptures have been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, along with shows in Paris and Munich. Her work has also reached a wide audience through social media, where her process videos and finished pieces have drawn broad public attention beyond the traditional gallery world.
