Cycle is a unique sculptural work created by Dan Lam in 2023, employing polymer, foam, acrylic, and resin as part of her Color Sculptures series. Its dimensions — 15 by 15 by 2½ inches — are notable for their flatness: where many of Lam's sculptures rise dramatically from their base in three-dimensional swells and protrusions, Cycle assumes an almost planar profile, its circular footprint suggesting a medallion, a cross-section through something organic and living, or the face of a clock. This departure from her typically volumetric forms makes Cycle a distinctive work within the series. The title points toward natural recurrence: the turning of seasons, the cycling of cells, the rotation of celestial bodies. Lam's surface treatment renders this cyclical suggestion in material terms — drips and polymer accretions accumulate along the disc-like form, tracing paths that feel both deliberate and spontaneous. The work's shallow depth contrasts with the visual density of its surface, which rewards extended looking with layers of color and texture that shift as the viewer moves. It can be read as a painting-like object or as a relief sculpture, occupying the productive space between two- and three-dimensional form. Dan Lam is an American sculptor of Vietnamese ancestry known internationally for her tactile, biomorphic sculptures that straddle the line between desire and unease. Working with non-traditional materials including polyurethane foam, acrylic paint, and epoxy resin, she has developed a singular visual language that is immediately recognizable and widely celebrated. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the United States and internationally. Cycle, as a unique work, is an unrepeatable object that captures one of Lam's most formally inventive approaches to the sculptural surface.

Dan Lam earned a BFA from the University of North Texas in 2010, followed by an MFA from Arizona State University in 2014, where she began developing the sculptural techniques that would come to define her practice.
Lam creates drippy, blob like sculptures using polyurethane foam, resin, and acrylic, often finished with auto body paint that shifts color as viewers move around the piece. Her work sits at the border of attraction and repulsion, taking cues from natural forms found in the body and the ocean while pushing them into something stranger and more excessive. Materials play a defining role in her process, and she often allows their behavior to guide the final shape of a piece rather than working from a fixed plan.
Lam's sculptures have been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally, including at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, along with shows in Paris and Munich. Her work has also reached a wide audience through social media, where her process videos and finished pieces have drawn broad public attention beyond the traditional gallery world.
