About this work

MICK JAGGER (DREAMLAND) (2023) is an acrylic and hand-pulled oil-based ink screenprint with diamond dust on linen by Russell Young, produced as a unique impression in Devil Pink—one of the artist’s most recent explorations of the rock icon who has represented a particular strain of charismatic, transgressive celebrity for more than six decades. Measuring 62 by 48 inches (157.5 x 121.9 cm), the work presents Jagger through the layered, visually charged technique that has made Young one of the most distinctive practitioners of celebrity portraiture working today: hand-pulled inks applied in multiple passes, building a surface of depth and luminosity, then transformed by the application of diamond dust into something spectacular and irreplaceable. The palette of Devil Pink—bold, provocative, and perfectly calibrated to the subject’s legendary persona—saturates the composition with a colour that is simultaneously glamorous and confrontational. Young’s source imagery, drawn from the vast archive of rock photography that documents Jagger across half a century of performing life, is transformed through his screenprinting process into something that transcends documentation and enters the realm of cultural mythology. The hand-pulled quality of the printing, the richness of the linen ground, and the shimmering surface of the diamond dust all contribute to an object of remarkable physical presence and visual authority. Russell Young and Mick Jagger are, in a sense, natural subjects for each other: both figures whose careers have been defined by the intelligent exploitation of image, by the understanding that rock and roll and visual culture are inseparable, and by the endurance and relevance that come from continual reinvention. MICK JAGGER (DREAMLAND) is among Young’s most commanding recent works—a portrait of a living legend by an artist who understands the mythology of celebrity with uncommon depth and sophistication.

About the Mick Jagger Series

Russell Young's Mick Jagger series applies his signature screenprint-and-diamond-dust technique to one of rock music's most enduring faces, continuing the artist's long-running examination of fame, image and the mechanics of celebrity that runs through his wider body of work. Young, who trained in graphic design, drawing, film and photography before working extensively in music video production, brings a photographer's eye for iconography together with a painter's command of colour and surface.

Working from silkscreen on linen, Young builds each Mick Jagger portrait as a unique impression rather than a standard numbered edition, meaning no two colourways are identical even when derived from the same underlying image. The series includes several titled variations — among them "Mick Jagger, Fur Parka" — produced across a range of palettes from stark black-and-white treatments to vivid reds, blues and metallics. Many, though not all, incorporate Young's signature crushed-diamond-dust surface, a technique he applies by hand to introduce a shifting, light-catching texture across the picture plane.

The works are typically produced at a large scale, most often 62 x 48 inches, aligning the series with the dimensions Young favours across his broader catalogue of celebrity portraits. Young has cited Andy Warhol as a formative influence and owns a printmaking press once used by Warhol, a lineage that is visible in the Mick Jagger series' engagement with repetition, colour variation and the transformation of a widely circulated photographic image into a singular painted object.
