About this work

Influenced by the architectural facades and decorative patterns observed in and around Wall Street and Lower Manhattan, this series delves into key themes within Lichtenstein's artistry, particularly focusing on texture, surface intricacies, relief, and reflectivity. Titled after the horizontal structures crowning columns in Classical Greek architecture, Lichtenstein's Entablatures take on a distinctly American character, stemming from a revivalist approach to architectural imitation that proliferated during the early twentieth century's industrialized era. By isolating stereotypical symbols associated with what the artist terms "imperial power" and "the establishment," Lichtenstein examines the impact of mass production and replication on cultural symbols. This exploration, marked by a continuous investigation into patterns and repetition, also highlights the subtle influences of Classical order evident in Minimalist sculpture and Color Field painting.

About the Entablature Series

Roy Lichtenstein Entablature Prints For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein Entablature prints for sale at Guy Hepner Gallery, New York. The Entablature series (1976) represents Lichtenstein's most sustained engagement with architectural subject matter — a body of work based on the decorative friezes, cornices, and classical ornamentation of New York commercial buildings, specifically the neoclassical stonework he photographed on office buildings along Park Avenue in Manhattan.

The Concept

Lichtenstein photographed the entablatures — the horizontal bands of decoration that sit above the columns of classical and neoclassical buildings, comprising architrave, frieze, and cornice — of commercial buildings he encountered while walking in New York. He then converted these architectural photographs into screenprints using his standard graphic vocabulary: Ben-Day dots rendering the three-dimensional relief of the stonework as flat, graphic pattern; primary and secondary colour fields replacing the tonal gradations of carved stone; black outlines structuring the intricate classical ornament.

The result is among the most formally rigorous of his print series. The architectural source material — egg-and-dart moulding, dentils, triglyphs, metopes, acanthus scrollwork — provides an unusually complex graphic structure, and Lichtenstein's translation of these elements into his dot-and-outline vocabulary demonstrates the analytical precision underlying his apparently simple Pop method.

The Entablature series was published in multiple versions: screenprints, reliefs, and mixed-media works combining screenprint with metallic foil — the latter anticipating the foil elements that would appear in the Reflections series a decade later.

The Entablature prints exist in standard screenprint and foil-enhanced versions. Foil versions, which incorporate metallic elements into the architectural surface, are rarer and command corresponding collector interest.

The complex multi-layer printing of the Entablature works requires careful condition examination — particularly of the dot areas that simulate architectural relief and of any foil elements present. Standard UV and handling considerations apply.

Hand-signed examples command premiums. Lichtenstein's pencil signature on Entablature prints is consistent with his practice across this period.

The Entablature series represents a significant departure from his Pop source material into fine art architecture — an underappreciated chapter of his work that serious collectors are increasingly recognising as central to his full practice.

Authentication

Entablature prints are authenticated via the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation catalogue raisonné (Corlett). Guy Hepner provides full provenance documentation for all works.

About Roy Lichtenstein

Our inventory spans lithographs, screenprints, and unique works from his most collected series: Brushstrokes, Reflections, Nudes, Interiors, Haystacks, Cathedral, Entablature, and American Indian Theme — all with full provenance and Corlett catalogue raisonné references. Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997) is the defining figure of American Pop Art and one of the most actively traded artists on the post-war and contemporary market. His bold graphic language — Ben-Day dots, black outlines, primary palettes drawn from comic books and advertising — is among the most instantly recognisable in twentieth-century art. Born in New York City, he was exhibited by Leo Castelli Gallery from 1962 and worked until his death in September 1997, producing one of the most extensively documented print catalogues of any artist of his generation.

Roy Lichtenstein Art For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein art for sale spans signed prints, paintings, and unique works across his full catalogue. His most collected categories: signed and numbered screenprints and lithographs from the major series, unique works on paper, and large-format canvas paintings. The auction benchmark was set when Masterpiece (1962) sold for $165 million in a private transaction in 2017, and Nurse (1964) achieved $95.4 million at Christie's New York in 2015. Major print series regularly achieve $100,000–$2 million at Sotheby's, Christie's, and Phillips.

Roy Lichtenstein Prints For Sale

The most liquid and accessible segment of his market. Working with Gemini G.E.L., Petersburg Press, and Castelli Graphics, Lichtenstein produced lithographs, screenprints, woodcuts, and relief prints across three decades. Key series at Guy Hepner:

  • Brushstrokes (1965–66) — Pop satire of Abstract Expressionist gesture; his most conceptually celebrated series
  • Haystacks (1969) — Monet homage in Ben-Day dots and primary colour; his most decorative print subject
  • Cathedral — Rouen Cathedral reworked through his commercial-art graphic vocabulary
  • American Indian Theme (1980) — a major suite exploring Indigenous American motifs
  • Reflections (1988–94) — canvases-within-canvases; his most technically intricate prints; strongest late-career market
  • Nudes (1994–97) — figurative final series synthesising his full graphic vocabulary
  • Interiors (1990s) — consumer culture imagery from furniture and décor catalogues; a distinctly American subject
  • Peace Through Chemistry — Science and Technology series; bold, graphic, institutionally held

Signed impressions command significant premiums over unsigned editions. Corlett catalogue raisonné reference and publisher's certificate documentation are essential for any acquisition.

Roy Lichtenstein Original Art For Sale

Roy Lichtenstein original art for sale — unique paintings on canvas — represents the rarest category of his output. Major early canvases are primarily in institutional collections; secondary market appearances are concentrated at evening sales at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips. Works on paper and preparatory drawings offer compelling opportunities for collectors seeking unique works with strong Lichtenstein provenance at more accessible price points.
