About this work

What's On Your Mind is a 2025 Book Wall Piece by Johan Deckmann, measuring 11 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches (30 x 22 cm), in which acrylic paint on a book cover carries one of the most fundamental questions of interpersonal communication and therapeutic practice. The phrase — tender, direct, and genuinely curious — invites disclosure and reflection, making the work a kind of painted invitation to inner examination. Deckmann's Book Wall Pieces consistently engage with the language of care, inquiry, and self-awareness, and What's On Your Mind is among his most openly inviting works. The question is both intimate and democratic: it is the question asked by friends, therapists, and parents alike — and in its most familiar contemporary incarnation, by the social media platforms inviting us to share our thoughts. Deckmann's rendering of this phrase on a book cover collapses these different registers into a single object, leaving the viewer to decide which mode of asking resonates most. The physical book is, as always in Deckmann's practice, integral to the work's meaning. Books are repositories of thought — of what others have had on their minds, considered carefully enough to be recorded and published. To ask 'What's On Your Mind' across such an object is to position the viewer's interior life in relation to the accumulated external life of literature. This is Deckmann at his most conceptually delicate: a simple question carrying considerable philosophical weight.

What's On Your Mind

About Johan Deckmann

Johan Deckmann is a Danish artist based in Copenhagen, where he also works as a practicing psychotherapist and author. He has been creating paintings and sculptures since the 1990s, though the body of work he is best known for, a series of imaginary self-help books, first appeared in 2014.

Deckmann sources old book covers, records, suitcases, and boxes from second-hand shops, then paints invented titles and silhouetted figures directly onto them. The results resemble vintage self-help guides from the 1960s and 70s, using muted tones and worn textures to give each piece a sense of history. His background in psychotherapy and music composition informs his approach to language, favoring short, pointed phrases that compress complex emotions into a single line. The titles range from wry to unexpectedly tender, and their directness allows them to resonate across different audiences regardless of background.

Deckmann has described his work as a way of applying the same instinct he uses in therapy, to find language that gets to the core of a feeling, to visual art instead. His pieces have been shown internationally, including in Copenhagen, Rome, Amsterdam, New York, and Miami, and have built a substantial following online, where his book pieces are widely shared and recognized.
