About this work

Slow Burn – Limited Edition Print (2023) is a giclée on Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic (340gsm) by Gregory Thielker, produced in an edition of twenty-five plus five artist’s proofs and measuring 18 by 26 inches (45.7 x 66 cm). The work belongs to Thielker’s Works on Paper series and represents his most recent published print—an image that channels the atmospheric qualities of his celebrated Liquid Night paintings into the specific expressive possibilities of fine art printmaking on a premium metallic substrate. The Hahnemühle Photo Rag Metallic paper, with its luminous surface that holds ink with exceptional fidelity while imparting a quality of internal glow, is perfectly suited to the play of light and reflectivity that defines Thielker’s visual concerns. Slow Burn presents the rain-slicked world seen through a rain-covered windshield at night—the visual domain that Thielker has explored with sustained and deepening sophistication across his career. In this work, the title’s suggestion of a gradual, sustained illumination finds its visual equivalent in the way light moves through the distorting medium of water on glass: slowly, softly, the distinct sources of streetlight and vehicle light dissolving into one another through the liquid film that fractures and multiplies their glow. The metallic substrate of the paper intensifies this effect, imparting to the printed surface a luminosity that approaches the inner light of the original oil painting. Gregory Thielker has established himself as one of the most technically accomplished and conceptually sophisticated photorealist painters of his generation. Slow Burn, as a fine art giclée edition, brings his practice to a wider audience with full respect for the qualities of the original—the precision of light and atmosphere, the complex relationship between clarity and dissolution, the sense of being inside a moment of quiet urban beauty that his paintings so consistently achieve. The print is an object of genuine beauty and considerable formal intelligence.

About Gregory Thielker

Gregory Thielker is an American artist currently based in Geneva, Switzerland, known for hyperrealistic oil paintings that capture the experience of perception itself. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ringling College of Art and Design and his Master of Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

Thielker's paintings are meticulously rendered, often taking weeks or months to complete, and focus on scenes viewed through obscured or shifting perspectives, most notably roads and landscapes seen through rain-streaked car windows. His series Under the Unminding Sky captures these blurred, in-between moments, using precision technique to convey something closer to memory or mood than a straightforward record of place. Working from personal photographs and direct observation, he is drawn to how the road frames and limits the way landscape is experienced.

His work has taken him around the world, including extended projects in India, Afghanistan, El Salvador, and along the entire length of the US Mexico border. He is a Fulbright Fellow and has completed residencies in Norway, Argentina, and India, among others.

Thielker has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad, with venues including Guy Hepner in New York, Galerie Le Feuvre & Roze in Paris, and Castor Gallery in New York. His work has been featured in Juxtapoz, The Guardian, and La Repubblica.
