In Fashion Model (2025), George Condo continues to push the boundaries of portraiture by fusing the worlds of high fashion, satire, and psychological abstraction. The work presents a singular figure, elongated and doll-like, with an exaggeratedly simplified yet intensely expressive form. Condo’s Fashion Model is at once a parody of beauty standards and a celebration of the surreal possibilities of the human figure, showcasing his mastery at blending grotesque humor with elegance. The figure, with its impossibly tall and narrow proportions, recalls the elongated silhouettes of runway models, yet Condo subverts the glamour by imbuing the subject with an absurdist twist: a cartoonish head with bulging eyes and a wide grin, paired with a body segmented into bold geometric planes of color. The vibrant palette—brilliant blues, reds, greens, and oranges—evokes the palette of modernist abstraction, while the pastel background softens the scene, heightening the tension between sophistication and parody.Condo’s ability to play with form and identity is central to this work. Fashion Model engages with the art historical lineage of Picasso, Léger, and even Surrealism, yet reinterprets those traditions through the lens of contemporary culture. The model’s ponytail, rendered with almost comic exaggeration, underscores the performative, constructed nature of fashion and image-making. At the same time, the fractured geometry of the body suggests the internal pressures of self-presentation—the dissonance between how one is perceived and how one feels. The humor in Fashion Model is sharp but never cruel. Instead, it reflects Condo’s fascination with the absurdities of modern life, where ideals of beauty, identity, and consumption collide. By distorting the model into an almost totemic figure, he critiques the rigidity of fashion-world aesthetics while celebrating the sheer theatricality of style. The work exists in the space between satire and reverence, between the grotesque and the glamorous. In many ways, Fashion Model epitomizes Condo’s project of “psychological cubism”: the layering of external image with internal complexity. Behind the brightly colored façade lies a subtle commentary on the ways we construct and fragment identity in a culture obsessed with appearance. The result is a portrait that is humorous, vibrant, and deeply unsettling, holding a mirror to the contradictions of contemporary beauty and fashion. For more information or to buy Fashion Model (2025)) by Pablo Picasso, contact our galleries using the form below.

George Condo (b. 1957, Concord, New Hampshire) is one of the most intellectually ambitious and formally distinctive painters working in America today — an artist who has spent four decades developing a singular synthesis of Old Master technique, Picassian Cubism, Surrealist imagery, and the grotesque-comic visual language of cartoons into a practice he has described as Psychological Cubism and Artificial Realism. Condo studied art history and music theory at the University of Massachusetts Lowell before relocating to New York in the early 1980s, where his career unfolded alongside some of the most energetic figures of that moment: he worked at Andy Warhol's Factory and counted Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring among his closest interlocutors.
He spent formative periods in Cologne and Paris in the mid-1980s, absorbing the technical traditions of European painting — the glazed surfaces of the Old Masters, the psychological intensity of Goya's portraits, the spatial fracturing of Picasso's Cubism — and bringing them into contact with the flat graphic energy of American cartoons, the fragmented anxieties of Surrealism, and a sustained interest in the human face as a site of psychological distortion and revelation.
Condo's portraits — works he describes as representations of imaginary or psychological states rather than specific individuals — depict faces that are simultaneously recognisably human and explosively distorted: multiple eyes, displaced noses, mouths caught in expressions that compress laughter and anguish into a single gesture. These works operate with a force that is simultaneously uncomfortable and irresistibly compelling; the grotesque is never cold in Condo, always shot through with empathy and dark humour.
His major series include the Psychological Portraits, Broken Heads, Maniac Heads, and Cartoon Abstraction works from the 1980s onward, alongside the Galaxy Paintings and Abstract Expressionist Heads from his more recent campaigns.
Condo's printmaking practice encompasses etching (often with aquatint), lithography, screenprinting, and woodcut. Key print series include the Heads editions — ranging from intimate etchings to large-scale screenprints — Cartoon Heads with bold graphic line and flat colour, and Prints after Paintings that translate his major canvas compositions into the print medium. Works on paper (gouaches, watercolours, ink drawings) represent some of the most sought-after objects in his output, offering direct access to Condo's hand and revealing the graphic intelligence that underpins the painted practice.
In 2010, Condo created the cover artwork for Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy — a commission that brought his visual language to a mass global audience and generated a new wave of collector interest among younger buyers. The cover introduced millions of people to the distortions and intensity that characterise his practice, in a lineage that connects directly to his early formation at Warhol's Factory and his friendships with Basquiat and Haring.
The market for George Condo art for sale has strengthened dramatically over the past decade. Big John (2006) achieved $9,100,000 at Sotheby's Hong Kong in 2023; Nude Forms (2010) reached $6,800,000 at Sotheby's New York in 2021. Major canvases consistently command seven-figure results. Edition prints have traded between $5,000 and $80,000 depending on size, edition, and condition — offering strong market access at every level. Significant works on paper have achieved $100,000–$500,000 at Christie's, Sotheby's, and Phillips.
Condo's work is held in permanent collections at MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Städel Museum Frankfurt, The Broad, MOCA Los Angeles, and SFMOMA.
Subject and series: Works from the Psychological Portraits, Broken Heads, and Maniac Heads series command the strongest market interest. The distorted face is Condo's core subject and his most commercially durable.
Medium: Unique paintings carry the strongest prices; significant works on paper offer the best combination of intimacy and accessibility; edition prints offer the most accessible entry points. Etchings — where Condo's hand is most directly present in the plate — are particularly valued by print collectors.
Edition size: Smaller editions, artist proofs, and unique variants within a print run carry significant premium over standard numbered impressions.
Provenance: Documented exhibition history and catalogue documentation strengthen value meaningfully for significant acquisitions.
