Rescued From Drowning, 2026
Mixed Media on Raw Acrylic Canvas | Hand-Framed with Oak
81 x 100 cm | 32 x 39 Inches
David Schmitt has established himself as a compelling voice in contemporary mixed media practice, garnering attention from collectors who recognise his ability to balance raw materiality with emotional depth. His works occupy an increasingly prominent position within the contemporary art market, appealing to those who seek pieces that carry both visual weight and conceptual resonance. Rescued From Drowning presents a visceral encounter with survival and transformation. Executed on raw acrylic canvas, the work embraces the unprimed surface as an active participant in the composition, allowing pigments and mixed media elements to interact with the fabric in unpredictable ways. This choice lends the piece an immediacy that feels almost confessional, as though the act of creation itself mirrors the desperate reach toward air and light suggested by the title. The artist's hand-framing in oak grounds this emotional intensity within a considered, artisanal presentation, establishing a dialogue between the untamed energy of the work and the discipline of its containment. At 81 by 100 centimetres, the scale invites intimate viewing while maintaining sufficient presence to command attention within a collection. The interplay of texture, gesture, and material accumulation rewards sustained looking, revealing layers of meaning that unfold over time. Schmitt's treatment of his subject matter suggests both personal narrative and universal experience, positioning this work as a significant example of his evolving practice. David Schmitt is a self-taught painter and printmaker based in Barcelona.
In his work, he blends folk storytelling with street sensibility, pairing an archaic, childlike aesthetic with bold visual presence and commentary. He highlights texture and rough shapes to capture a sense of timeless simplicity while exploring themes of love, craft, and human connection.
“I have always been drawn to storytelling in painting. For me, it sits somewhere between folk-, pop-, and cave art — something deeply human. My work can be read as a love letter to all forms of traditional craftsmanship, as I believe that preserving the involvement of the human hand and mind, with all its imperfections, is a way of preserving the soul in the world around us.”
