Five Facts About Damien Hirst Original Works - Spin Paintings
Hirst's Spin Paintings began as experiments in 1992 and developed in earnest from 1994, after he had a spin machine built while living in Berlin.
The technique uses a rotating circular surface onto which household gloss paint is poured or flung, with centrifugal force pulling the paint outward into radiating bands of colour.
The idea grew out of Hirst's participation, alongside artist Angus Fairhurst, in the 1993 Shoreditch event 'A Fete Worse Than Death,' where the two produced spin art dressed as clowns.
Works in this category are unique, one-off spin paintings rather than editioned prints, typically executed in acrylic, household gloss, and sometimes glitter on paper or canvas.
Hirst has noted that Spin Painting titles conventionally begin with the word 'Beautiful' and end with the word 'painting.'
