Bridget Riley’s Coloured Greys series combines subtle gradients of black, white, and gray with occasional touches of color to create sophisticated, layered compositions. In this series, Riley explores the delicate balance between neutrality and vibrancy, allowing hints of color to emerge from a primarily grayscale palette. The interplay between tones generates a soft yet compelling visual rhythm, drawing the viewer’s eye across the canvas and highlighting Riley's refined approach to color, depth, and movement within minimalistic forms.4o

Discover Bridget Riley's iconic Coloured Greys series, a landmark collection that demonstrates the British abstract artist's mastery of optical abstraction and colour theory. Created during a pivotal period in Riley's practice, these works showcase her distinctive use of precisely calibrated greys paired with subtle chromatic interventions, creating dynamic visual vibrations that challenge perception.
The Coloured Greys series represents a significant evolution in Riley's exploration of how colour interacts with form and space. Each composition—including Coloured Greys II, Coloured Greys 2, and Coloured Greys 1—employs her characteristic geometric precision combined with carefully orchestrated tonal relationships that generate movement across the canvas surface.
Riley's work from this series remains highly sought by serious collectors and institutions, reflecting both her historical importance in contemporary art and the enduring visual power of her investigations into colour and perception. These pieces exemplify why her work commands respect in the contemporary art market.

Riley was awarded the International Prize for Painting at the 1968 Venice Biennale, cementing her international reputation. From the late 1960s, she began introducing colour into her work, working first with carefully limited Egyptian palettes and later a full range of hues, exploring stripe-based and diagonal compositions in which colour interaction becomes the primary subject. Her series including Orphean Elegy, The Seasons, and Rajasthan demonstrate the sustained rigour and beauty of this investigation. She continues to work from studios in London and Cornwall.
