Terry Urban: Outlaw Tenderness

The seven works in this room are all from 2026, all built from the same combination of acrylic, oil, charcoal, and aerosol on canvas. That consistency is deliberate. What changes from one work to the next is the subject, and the subjects here are quieter than Urban's road mythology might suggest.

This is a collection about home, not the highway. Gardens, lawns, smoke breaks, unpredictable households. Urban is zooming in, trading the cinematic sweep of his earlier work for something closer and more observational. The one exception pushes toward the margins of that domestic world, toward the people who exist just outside the frame of ordinary life. It keeps the collection from settling too comfortably into the everyday.

The charcoal in the medium mix matters. It gives the surfaces a rawness and immediacy that softer materials alone wouldn't produce. These paintings feel worked and reworked, decisions made and partially undone. That process stays visible in the finished work, and it earns the emotional weight the titles carry.

Urban is not romanticizing everyday life. He is looking at it steadily and finding it worth painting.
