Hunt Slonem: Five Decades, No Deviation

A visual language that deepens with every canvas

About This Collection

Hunt Slonem is one of the most institutionally embedded American painters alive, with work held across more than 250 museum collections including the Guggenheim, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney. He has been painting the same subjects for five decades.

The bird paintings come directly from the aviary of exotic rescued birds that surrounds him in his Manhattan studio daily. The rabbit works began as a personal reckoning with the Chinese zodiac and function less as portraiture than as meditation, each canvas returning to the same question with a different answer. The butterfly paintings carry the luminosity of stained glass, rendered against jewel-toned and gilded grounds that hold a room without effort.

Select works incorporate diamond dust into the oil and acrylic surface. The result is a paint quality that shifts with light and position, making the experience of living with these works different from viewing them once. That distinction matters to collectors who understand the difference between a painting that photographs well and one that rewards being in the same room.

Slonem's market has grown without reversal across five decades. His paintings hold their value because they hold their ground.
