Elmo Hood: No Pressure, No Diamonds
On the playing card paintings and the philosophy behind them
About This Collection
Elmo Hood is a self-taught British artist based in Brisbane, whose career began not in a studio but at a pub table in 2013, where he collaged two playing cards into a piece that went viral overnight. What followed were international exhibitions, a stage set for Mary J. Blige and Maxwell's world tour, and shows alongside Banksy and Shepard Fairey. He came to art through loss and built a practice entirely on his own terms.
The Playing Cards series is where that practice is most fully realized. Each work begins with a found card whose existing printed color becomes the palette for the entire composition. Hood does not choose his colors. The card does. He works into what is already there, building characters and scenes around imagery that predates him, using dark tones for shading and outline to give each piece a graphic clarity that sits precisely between pop art and street art.
What separates these works from decorative objects is the titles. "In The War Of Ego The Loser Always Wins." "May Flowers Grow In The Saddest Parts Of You." "New York Never Wanted An Easy Story." These are not descriptions of what you are looking at. They are the point of the work, and they give each piece a philosophical weight that lingers well beyond the first viewing.
At the scale these works are made, they are also among the most versatile in any serious collection. Intimate enough to anchor a private room, strong enough to command one.
