Elmo Hood has never been interested in making you feel comfortable. What he has always been interested in is making you feel something real, and this new body of work is the most direct he has been about the difference.

The burning here is heavier than before. The edges of each card are scorched and darkened in ways that feel less like craft and more like commentary. Hood has found the clichés, the phrases people put on walls to get through the week, and he has held a flame to them. Not to be provocative. Because that is genuinely how he feels about them, and the work is better for his honesty.

Hood came to art through grief, built a practice from nothing, and has been quietly making some of the most emotionally precise small-format work in the current market. This room is his sharpest statement yet. The flame, the sarcasm, the card stock underneath it all: none of it is an accident.
