The Witches, 2014
Digital c print
22.5 x 30 Inches 30 x 40 Inches 45 x 60 Inches
The Witches (2014) is a digital C-print by Tyler Shields, issued as an edition of 3 and available in three sizes from 22.5 × 30 to 45 × 60 inches. The work engages with one of the oldest and most richly mythologized female archetypes in Western culture—the witch—bringing to this charged figure the visual sophistication and psychological complexity that characterize Shields' finest portraiture and his sustained interest in power, mythology, and the feminine. In art history, literature, and popular culture, the witch figure has been simultaneously feared, reviled, and fascinated over—a woman who possesses power existing outside sanctioned social structures, who occupies the margins and refuses domestication. Shields approaches this archetype not with irony or mere allusion but with genuine visual ambition, creating an image that captures the particular energy of feminine power that refuses its constraints. The plural of the title—The Witches rather than The Witch—suggests community, sisterhood, and collective strength. The Witches demonstrates Shields' willingness to engage with mythological and literary traditions as material for his visual art—to treat the history of Western cultural imagination as a legitimate source for contemporary photography. It is a work of considerable psychological depth and visual richness, offering collectors an image that operates simultaneously as a striking visual statement, a meditation on power, and a thoughtful engagement with the long history of art's ambivalent fascination with feminine authority. The digital C-print process produces images of exceptional tonal range, color accuracy, and long-term archival stability, ensuring that the work retains its full visual impact for decades to come.

Tyler Shields Edge of Reality

Tyler Shields was born in Jacksonville, Florida, and began his creative career as a professional inline skater, competing in the X Games and touring with Tony Hawk before shifting his focus to photography. His early photographs gained attention online, and a chance viral image helped launch his career as a photographer working within the Hollywood entertainment world.
Shields is known for bold, provocative photography that blends glamour with elements of tension, danger, and destruction, often incorporating rich color, dramatic lighting, and meticulously staged scenes. His work frequently explores contrasts between beauty and chaos, using striking visual concepts, from vivid color explosions to scenes built around luxury objects, to create images that are both polished and unsettling. He has photographed a wide range of actors and public figures throughout his career, always aiming for a cinematic, tightly composed final image captured in camera rather than through digital manipulation.
Beyond photography, Shields has worked as a filmmaker, screenwriter, and author, publishing both photography books and fiction. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private and public collections, and he continues to be based in Los Angeles.
